Jockey Jairo Rendon: Scraps picks up the pieces in Bear’s Den
Scraps stormed down the center of the Gulfstream Park turf course to capture the $75,000 Bear’s Den by 3 1/4 lengths over Timmy M. on Saturday. It was another neck back in third to Lahinch.
The Bear’s Den was for 3-year-olds at 7 1/2 furlongs.
Scraps ($21.20) was content to let the pace go as Sovereign Warrior took the field through an opening quarter-mile in 22.67 seconds and a half-mile in 46.28. Scraps was angled off the rail down the backside and was shuffled back before coming on again on the final turn. The eventual winner entered the stretch six wide and closed with a furor to prove much the best. He covered the distance on firm ground in 1:28.23.
Jairo Rendon rode Scraps for trainer Stanley Gold.
Timmy M. lacked room until late when making his run up the rail, but managed to edge fellow Joe Orseno trainee Lahinch.
Scraps, who was coming off a first-level allowance win for Florida-breds, is a son of Brethren. He races for his breeder, Arindel. Scraps won for the third time in his career and the first-place check of $45,000 pushed his bankroll to $155,730.
