Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Winnie Dixie covered the six furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:11 and returned $3.60, $2.60 and $2.10 as the 4-5 favorite. Daddy’s Honor was second best, completing the $9.40 exacta and paying $4 to place and $2.60 to show. It was another 6 ½ lengths back to Ima Jersey Girl, who paid $2.20 to show.
“I had to gallop around the other horses in the slop. My filly is little and she didn’t like it (the slop),” said winning jockey Paco Lopez. “At the quarter-pole, I was waiting and waiting and then I pushed her and she responded.”
Friday’s win was the third straight and fourth in eight career starts for Winnie Dixie, a 4-year-old daughter of Dixie Union and the Allen’s Prospect mare Icy Demeanor.
Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Saturday, July 21 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:45 p.m.
