Scalable Expands Résumé in Monmouth Oaks
Scalable wins the Monmouth Oaks at Monmouth Park
Bill Denver/EQUI-PHOTORepole Stable’s Scalable climbed to new heights July 27 when she notched her first graded stakes score in the $255,500 Monmouth Oaks (G3).
The victory came one month after Scalable scored a confidence-building victory in an allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs. Graded stakes-placed last year as a 2-year-old, the Speightstown filly was more than up to the task after her rejuvenating win, running down favored Gun Song Saturday at the Jersey Shore.
Tucked into a rail-skimming, stalking trip under Monmouth Park‘s leading rider Paco Lopez, the pair bided their time behind opening fractions of :24.55 and :48.72. New York invader Gun Song, an impressive winner of the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) in May, appeared prime to take her second graded stakes when wrangling the lead from Little Jamie midway down the stretch. The Mark Hennig trainee’s advantage was short-lived, as she was soon met with an outside challenge from Scalable.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Scalable ($8.60) finished three-quarters of a length in front Gun Song in a final time of 1:44.71 for the 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track.
Little Jamie completed the trifecta.
“We were able to sit behind horses up the backstretch and she was going well,” Lopez said. “Once we angled out around the far turn, she really started to pick it up. In the stretch, the other horse (Gun Song) was tough, but we pushed by and she finished up well.”
